Gordon Ryan
BlackBiography
Gordon Ryan is an American Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and is widely regarded as the greatest no-gi grappler of all time. Known by the nickname “The King,” he is the most dominant and decorated competitor in the history of the ADCC World Championships, holding a record seven ADCC titles across multiple weight classes and superfight divisions.
Ryan was born in Monroe Township, New Jersey, and began training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at the age of 15. He earned his black belt in approximately five years, reflecting his intense training regimen and analytical approach to the sport.
He initially trained under Miguel Benitez and later Tom DeBlass, but his competitive breakthrough came under Garry Tonon and John Danaher. Ryan was a central member of the Danaher Death Squad and later New Wave Jiu-Jitsu, before becoming a co-founder of Kingsway Jiu-Jitsu in Austin, Texas.
Ryan developed a highly systematic submission-based style, particularly known for his dominance in leglocking positions. He played a major role in popularizing the position-before-submission framework for heel hooks and lower-body attacks at the elite level.
In addition to his leglock success, Ryan is renowned for a crushing, methodical top game. His highest-percentage submission is the rear naked strangle, which he frequently secures after establishing dominant back control.
Ryan’s competitive record reflects an unprecedented period of dominance in no-gi and submission-only grappling, with over 150 career victories and an exceptionally high submission rate.
His black belt accomplishments include triple gold at the 2022 ADCC World Championships in the over 99kg, absolute, and superfight divisions; double gold at the 2019 ADCC World Championships; gold at the 2017 ADCC World Championships; and multiple IBJJF No-Gi Worlds titles.
The 2022 ADCC World Championships marked a historic milestone, as Ryan became the first athlete to win gold in three separate ADCC divisions at a single event and defeated nine-time champion Andre Galvao in the superfight via rear naked.
Beyond competition, Ryan has maintained an elite level despite chronic health challenges. He is one of the most influential figures in modern jiu-jitsu, a prolific instructor with widely used instructional material, and a highly visible public figure who has significantly expanded mainstream attention and earning potential within professional submission grappling.
