Josh Saunders
BlackBiography
Josh Saunders is an Australian Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and one of the country’s most prominent heavyweight no-gi grapplers.
An ADCC veteran and 2024 ADCC World Championships semifinalist in the +99kg division, Saunders is also a two-time ADCC Trials winner.
He is best known for his exceptionally rapid rise through the ranks, earning his black belt in under four years, as well as for his pressure-heavy top game.
Saunders is the founder of the HPU (High Performance Unit) Coaching platform and has built his reputation around a wrestling- and judo-influenced style.
His approach emphasizes low-risk takedowns, consistent entries to the rear body lock, and a strong focus on finishing via the rear naked strangle.
Competing at approximately 6’4” and 115kg, Saunders is notable for his ability to translate size and strength into disciplined, system-based effectiveness rather than relying on athleticism alone.
In addition to his competitive career, he is an active coach and content creator, using HPU to help accelerate the development of grapplers worldwide.
