Overview
The kneebar is a lower-body submission that hyperextends the opponent’s knee joint by isolating the leg and applying force through controlled hip extension. Structurally similar to an armbar, the attacker aligns their hips against the opponent’s knee while controlling the ankle and upper leg to prevent escape.
In modern no-gi grappling, the kneebar serves as both a finishing submission and a transitional threat within leglock systems. While heel hooks dominate many exchanges, the kneebar remains a highly effective and reliable attack, especially against opponents focused on defending rotational leglocks. Its versatility allows it to be applied from both top and bottom positions, making it a staple in well-rounded leglock arsenals.
