Jason Rau

Biography

Jason Rau is an American Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, professional grappler, and highly respected instructor, often referred to as “your grappler’s favorite grappler.” Born in Long Island, New York, he began training relatively late at age 20 but made rapid progress through exposure to elite coaching and high-level training rooms.

Rau received his black belt in 2016 from former UFC Welterweight Champion Matt Serra, who mentored him from white belt. Afterward, he trained extensively under John Danaher in New York City and became a key member of the Danaher Death Squad, competing mainly in submission-only formats. His technical depth, especially in leglock mechanics, entanglement entries, and systematic finishing pathways, has earned him immense respect from elite peers such as Craig Jones and Nicky Ryan.

Rau is known for his highly technical instructional content—both through his popular Instagram reels and his BJJ Fanatics releases. His teaching is widely praised for being detailed, practical, and innovative.

Rau later co-founded the Vanguard Academy of Jiu-Jitsu in Long Island, New York, alongside fellow black belt Nick Ronan. The academy quickly gained attention for its high-level training environment and roster of visiting talent, including Jozef Chen, solidifying Rau’s reputation as a top-tier coach leading a rapidly growing team.
