Nicky Ryan
BlackBiography
Nicky Ryan is an American submission grappler from New Jersey and one of the most technically refined athletes of his generation. He was promoted to black belt by John Danaher in 2020 alongside teammate Ethan Crelinsten. Influenced early by his older brother Gordon Ryan, Nicky began training jiu-jitsu at age eight before briefly stepping away from the sport, returning seriously in 2015. Under Danaher’s guidance, he quickly absorbed the system-based, detail-oriented approach that would define his style and accelerate his rise in the no-gi scene.
Ryan progressed at an exceptional pace. As a teenager, he immersed himself in advanced leg lock systems, guard retention mechanics, and strong back-attack sequences. By 13, he was already submitting adult competitors, drawing national attention. To support the demands of full-time training, he left traditional schooling to train daily at Renzo Gracie Academy under John Danaher. At just 15, Nicky placed third at the East Coast ADCC Trials, earning a historic invitation to the 2017 ADCC World Championships in Finland, where he became the youngest competitor in ADCC history. He later won the West Coast ADCC Trials in 2019 with all submissions and went on to compete at the ADCC World Championships in both 2019 and 2022.
Following the split from New Wave Jiu-Jitsu, Ryan co-founded B-Team Jiu-Jitsu before later becoming a co-owner of Simple Man Martial Arts after CJI 2, taking on more of a coaching role. Despite injuries impacting portions of his competitive career, he remains widely regarded for his elite technique and deep understanding of modern grappling systems. His instructional materials are also highly regarded within the community.
