Overview
The Aoki lock is a powerful submission that targets the ankle and knee through a twisting foot-lock configuration. Named after Japanese MMA legend Shinya Aoki, who used the technique to finish several opponents, the submission combines elements of a straight ankle lock and a rotational force, creating immediate and dangerous pressure. When applied correctly, the Aoki lock can cause rapid damage to the ankle, knee ligaments, and surrounding structures.
Mechanically, the submission is achieved by securing the opponent’s foot with an achilles grip while rotating the heel inward, typically while placing the heel on the chest. This combination of plantar flexion and internal rotation puts significant pressure on both the knee and the ankle, making the Aoki lock difficult to escape once fully locked. The position is commonly entered from straight ashi entanglements and can also be used to create defensive reactions that open follow-up heel hook attacks or sweeping opportunities.
Common Applications
- From straight ashi garami variations: Secure the ankle-lock grip, rotate the heel inward while it is braced against the chest, and apply spiraling torque to attack the ankle and knee simultaneously.
