Mikey Musumeci
BlackBiography
Mikey Musumeci is an American Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt known for his exceptional technical precision, strategic intelligence, and innovative approach to submission grappling. Widely regarded as one of the most accomplished American competitors in the sport, Musumeci has earned multiple IBJJF World Championships and became the first American to win four gi world titles at the black belt level. His deep understanding of the sport has made him one of the most respected technicians in jiu-jitsu.
Originally from New Jersey, Musumeci began training at a young age and quickly rose through the ranks, earning his black belt from Gilbert Burns and Jonatas Gurgel. While he initially built his reputation in the gi, Musumeci later transitioned heavily into no-gi, becoming one of the most effective lighter-weight grapplers in the world. He signed with ONE Championship, where he captured the Flyweight Submission Grappling World Title, and later joined the UFC’s submission grappling division as a team captain for the UFC’s “UFC BJJ: Road to the Title” series. Musumeci is also the younger brother of Tammy Musumeci, who has established herself as a top-level black belt in her own right.
Musumeci is particularly known for his advanced leg-entanglement game, including the creation of the “Mikey Lock” which is a modified inside heel hook that gained widespread recognition in competition. His no-gi style is defined by sticky, persistent guard work—especially his strong K-guard, irimi ashi garami entanglements, and calf-slicer transitions that he uses to end the match. He is also one of the most popular instructors in the sport, producing detailed, highly technical instructionals embraced by practitioners of all levels.
Musumeci is known for his thoughtful, analytical personality, often described as a “jiu-jitsu nerd” in the best possible way. He has appeared on major platforms such as the Joe Rogan Experience and is widely loved for his humble demeanor and quirky habits—including his well-known obsession with pasta, which he famously eats all the time. His combination of elite skill, creativity, and approachable personality has made him one of the most admired figures in modern no-gi jiu-jitsu.
