Biography
Andre Galvao is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, ADCC Hall of Famer, and one of the most accomplished competitors and coaches in the history of the sport. Known for his explosive athleticism, dynamic guard passing, and complete technical game, Galvao became one of the defining figures of modern jiu-jitsu through multiple world titles in both gi and no-gi competition. His longevity, consistency, and ability to evolve across eras have made him one of the most respected athletes in grappling history.
Galvao is a multiple-time IBJJF World Champion, ADCC weight-class champion, and four-time ADCC Superfight Champion—an achievement that solidified his place among the all-time greats. His ADCC career is particularly iconic, marked by dominant performances against elite competitors across different generations. Galvao’s style blends pressure passing, back-taking chains, world-class wrestling, and a pace few athletes can match.
Outside of competition, Galvao is equally influential as a coach. In 2010, he co-founded Atos Jiu-Jitsu, which quickly rose to become one of the most successful modern teams in the world. Under his leadership, Atos produced a long list of champions and innovators and played a major role in shaping the technical landscape of both gi and no-gi grappling. His coaching style emphasizes hard work, discipline, structured drilling, and a championship mentality—values that deeply reflect his own competitive career.
Galvao’s impact on the sport extends far beyond titles. His instructionals, seminars, coaching, and high-profile rivalry with Gordon Ryan helped push submission grappling into a new era. Both as a competitor and a coach, Andre Galvao remains one of the most influential figures in the history of Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
