Nicholas Meregali
BlackBiography
Nicholas Meregali is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt widely regarded as one of the most accomplished gi competitors of his generation. A multiple-time IBJJF World Champion, he built his early career on exceptional guard play, precise timing, and a dynamic blend of sweeping, back-taking, and finishing sequences. Known for his outstanding armbar and triangle attacks, his gi success established him as one of the sport’s top athletes before transitioning into elite-level no-gi competition.
Meregali’s move into no-gi came under the guidance of John Danaher, training alongside athletes such as Gordon Ryan in Austin, Texas. His rapid progression surprised many, as he developed a dominant top game, a strong wrestling interface, and disciplined submission-hunting mechanics that translated immediately to high-level success. At ADCC 2022, he earned a bronze medal in his division and a silver medal in the absolute category, demonstrating the depth of his no-gi improvement. He further cemented his credibility by submitting elite no-gi athletes such as Kaynan Duarte and Felipe Pena, proving his ability to perform at the highest level in both styles.
Continuing to develop his no-gi game under John Danaher at New Wave Jiu-Jitsu and later at Kingsway Jiu-Jitsu, Meregali became known for his aggressive guard, wrestling exchanges, and highly effective submission attacks. However, his competitive momentum was interrupted at ADCC 2024, where he suffered a major upset loss to Michael Pixley and sustained a significant shoulder injury that required surgery. The injury forced Meregali into a lengthy rehabilitation period, keeping him out of competition for approximately 17 months.
In 2026, Meregali is scheduled to make his return to professional grappling at UFC BJJ 5, marking his comeback after the extended injury layoff. With major accomplishments in both gi and no-gi competition and continued evolution under one of the sport’s most influential coaching systems, Meregali remains one of the most unique and dangerous competitors in modern grappling.
