Biography

Eddie Bravo is an American Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, innovator, coach, and one of the most influential figures in modern no-gi grappling. A student of Jean Jacques Machado, Bravo rose to international prominence after submitting Royler Gracie at ADCC 2003 — one of the most famous upsets in grappling history. He went on to cement himself as a highly skilled competitor with a unique, creative no-gi system.

Bravo is best known as the founder of 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu, a global no-gi affiliation that emphasizes a submission-oriented approach built around techniques such as the rubber guard, twister, lockdown half guard, the truck, and an extensive naming system that made his style both accessible and culturally distinct. The name “10th Planet” was famously suggested by Joe Rogan in the early 2000s. Bravo originally wanted to call it “Nibiru Jiu-Jitsu,” but Rogan thought something simpler would be better. The Joe Rogan Experience played a major role in elevating Bravo’s influence and the growth of the affiliation, as well as highlighting talented students who came from 10th Planet, including the Martinez brothers, who originally got their start as break dancers.

Bravo is also known for his interest in conspiracy theories and his debates about them on podcasts, making him a recognizable pop-culture figure far beyond the jiu-jitsu world. Despite this eccentric public persona, he remains deeply respected for his technical contributions and coaching.

As a promoter, Bravo created the Eddie Bravo Invitational, one of the most important events in modern submission grappling. EBI rules and overtime formats helped shape the current landscape of no-gi competition and played a major role in the rise of the Danaher Death Squad, who dominated many of the early EBI brackets.

Eddie Bravo currently runs 10th Planet HQ in Los Angeles, the main gym where he trains and coaches. The broader 10th Planet affiliation has grown into a massive international network with schools around the world. His innovations in no-gi strategy, tournament design, and technique have made him one of the most impactful and unconventional figures in jiu-jitsu history.
