Biography

Rafael Mendes is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt and one of the most influential grapplers in the history of the sport. Widely regarded as one of the greatest technicians of all time, Mendes helped define the modern era of jiu-jitsu through his innovative guard systems, elite back-taking mechanics, and unmatched competitive precision. Alongside his brother Guilherme, he dominated the game for years and became a foundational figure in the evolution of modern grappling.

Mendes is a multiple-time IBJJF World Champion and ADCC World Champion, known for popularizing techniques such as the berimbolo, leg drag passing, and sophisticated guard sequences that blended inversion, angle creation, and relentless transitions. His style emphasized efficiency, timing, and clean mechanics over strength, setting the technical standard for an entire generation of lighter-weight competitors.

After retiring from competition, Mendes shifted his focus to coaching and athlete development. He co-founded Art of Jiu-Jitsu (AOJ) in Costa Mesa, California, where he built one of the strongest youth and adult competition programs in the world. Under his guidance, AOJ has produced multiple world-class athletes, including Tainan Dalpra, Jessa Khan, and numerous champions from the Believe & Achieve program.

Rafael Mendes remains one of the most respected figures in jiu-jitsu—celebrated for both his legendary competitive career and his profound influence as a coach, technician, and architect of the modern jiu-jitsu game.
