Cole Abate
BlackBiography
Cole Abate is an American Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt and one of the most talented young competitors of his generation. Known for his technical precision, mature tactical strategy, and exceptionally clean no-gi game, Abate rose to prominence at a young age through dominant performances on the international stage. His early composure, disciplined approach, and ability to implement complex sequences with efficiency earned him a reputation as a prodigy in modern grappling.
Abate began training at Art of Jiu-Jitsu under the Mendes brothers, where he developed the sharp guard work, precise back-taking mechanics, and strong positional fundamentals that define his style today. He broke out internationally by winning the North American ADCC Trials at just 16 years old—becoming one of the youngest Trials champions in the organization’s history. In no-gi, Abate is known for his aggressive guard, sharp guard passing, and a mature strategic approach rarely seen in younger athletes.
After earning his black belt under Guilherme Mendes, Abate transitioned into full-time adult competition, competing at major events such as Who’s Number One and ADCC. A two-time IBJJF No-Gi Worlds champion, he continues to refine a well-rounded no-gi game built on precision, tempo control, and calculated aggression, establishing himself as one of the most promising rising stars in the sport.
