Roger Gracie
BlackBiography
Roger Gracie is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt and one of the most universally recognized greatest grapplers of all time. A 10x IBJJF World Champion, ADCC World Champion, and successful MMA fighter, Roger is widely praised for his unmatched dominance across every major discipline of jiu-jitsu—gi, no-gi, and mixed martial arts. His fundamentals-based style, built on flawless pressure, impeccable timing, and a legendary mount and back control system, has made him one of the most technically perfect athletes in the history of the sport.
Roger’s competitive résumé is considered one of the most complete ever assembled. He won nearly all of his IBJJF black belt world titles by submission and captured ADCC gold in multiple divisions, showcasing a level of control and efficiency rarely seen at the elite level. He later transitioned to MMA, where he continued to perform at the highest level, competing for major promotions such as Strikeforce and the UFC before retiring from mixed martial arts.
John Danaher has repeatedly referred to Roger Gracie as one of the greatest jiu-jitsu fighters of all time, noting that he learned a tremendous amount from studying Roger’s approach—particularly his systems of positional control, defensive structure, and half guard passing. Roger’s ability to execute fundamental techniques with absolute precision against the world’s best athletes is a key part of what has cemented his reputation as the true all-around GOAT of Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
Today, Roger continues to influence the sport through teaching and overseeing the Roger Gracie Academy network, preserving and passing on the classic fundamentals that defined his historic career.
