Overview
Tripod passing is a form of guard passing where you create a tripod-like structure over your opponent, using your head as a post for balance while floating your legs above their butterfly hooks to reduce their off-balancing attempts. The approach typically begins by establishing an underhook and a strong head wedge, then following a step-by-step system of raking over one of the opponent’s knees, then the other, to clear both legs and complete the pass—often finishing directly into mount.
There are many variations of tripod passing, including sequences where the passer transitions into a knee cut, a bodylock, or a high bodylock to secure the pass. The style was popularized by Jozef Chen and has become a staple passing option in modern no-gi jiu-jitsu.
