Inside ashi garami

Category: Entanglement

Overview

Inside ashi garami is a specific variation of straight ashi garami in modern no-gi jiu-jitsu, defined by positioning both of the attacker’s legs to the inside of the opponent’s trapped leg. This inside alignment preserves the core structure of straight ashi garami while offering tighter control over the opponent’s knee line and limiting their ability to rotate or disengage.

As a form of straight ashi garami, the position is commonly used as an entry point into the leglock game. From here, the attacker can stabilize control and look to progress into more restrictive leg configurations. If the opponent’s secondary leg is captured, inside ashi garami can lead into the Z-lock, greatly increasing breaking mechanics and control. More commonly it can be used to apply a outside heel hook on the primary leg.
